French Broad Chocolate began as an unexpected love story: Dan and Jael met at a wedding in 2003, dropped out of grad school, and drove a vegetable oil-powered school bus to Costa Rica. There, they opened Bread & Chocolate, an award-winning dessert café on an old cacao farm — but soon discovered they weren’t quite “beach people.”
Their journey brought them to Asheville, NC, where they started French Broad Chocolate in their home kitchen. From selling at farmers markets to opening the beloved French Broad Chocolate Lounge downtown, demand grew quickly. By 2012, they became bean-to-bar chocolate makers, carefully sourcing cacao and crafting confections inspired by Asheville’s creative, collaborative spirit — what they call “cultural terroir.”
Named after the ancient French Broad River that winds through Asheville, the company celebrates place, craft, and community. Today, French Broad Chocolate crafts internationally acclaimed bars, bonbons, and desserts — all rooted in a commitment to quality, sustainability, and the art of chocolate.
